NAMSSC questions quality of road works

The National Association for Medium and Small-Scale Contractors has expressed concern with the quality of road works being done by AVIC International in some parts of Lusaka.
Association President Mutale Mpepo told Money FM News, in an interview that road works done under the Lusaka decongestion project are far much better compared to the ones being conducted by AVIC International.
“Now when you compare the Lusaka Decongestion project and the roads made by AVIC International you will notice that there is a very big difference,” Mr Mpepo said.
He added that road construction works conducted so far leave much to be desired, because once a road is constructed it has to stand a test of time of about 10 to 20 years.
“We are concerned because these are not the type of roads we expected, a road is supposed to stand a test of time of 10, 15 even 20 years,” Mr Mpepo explained.
He has since urged the construction company to improve the quality of road works being conducted because government is spending a lot of money on the projects.
However Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Vincent Mwale yesterday confirmed that the contract for the Engineering Design, Rehabilitation, Upgrading and Construction of selected Lusaka Urban Roads in Lusaka City that includes Lumumba, Mungwi, Great North and Ngwerere to Kasisi roads cost $70 million Dollars.
Mr Mwale said Government through RDA directed the contractor AVIC International Project Engineering Company to redo the works on the roads due to deformations observed.
