National Action for Quality Education in Zambia has proposed that schools begin engaging in Agribusinesses in order for them to become financially sound.
NAQEZ Executive Director Aaron Chansa tells Money FM News that it is sad that very few Universities, Colleges and Schools in Zambia are engaged in any income generating ventures.
Mr. Chansa says there is need to have mindset change in this regard and re- introduce production units in schools.
He is of the view that groups of Schools can also begin to manage endowment funds to create wealth.
“We also need most colleges and Universities to run farms and industrial production lines for fund raising and other purposes,” said Mr. Chansa.
Mr. Chansa has also saluted Minister of General Education David Mabumba and Permanent Secretary Dr. Jobicks Kalumba for suspending the practice of schools donating huge sums of money to Provincial and District education authorities for co-curricular activities.
“This decision made by the Ministry has elated NAQEZ, teachers and Zambians across the country. The Minister and the PS should be highly commended for their patriotism and having interest of the country at heart. We fully support this suspension and it is hoped that all concerned will adhere to this halting,” he said.
He adds that now that these unwarranted donations have been suspended, he hopes that the Ministry of Finance will begin to fund extra curricula activities in schools.
“We also demand that operations at PEO and DEBS be financed by the Ministry. The trend of begging money from schools must be shunted in the historical dustbins. Schools must be given space to mobilise funds for purposes of buying books, desks and other academic essentials,” he said.
He has since appealed to all schools across the country to make sure that money collected from pupils is spent on the things which will ultimately improve quality of education in schools.
