Ndola businessman convicted for Corruption involving K10, 000

• Chief Resident Magistrate found Brian Mbewe guilty on one count of Corrupt Practices with Public Officer.
• The Court has also ordered the forfeiture of the seized K10, 000 cash gratification to the State to be deposited in the government revenue fund.
• Anti-Corruption Commission arrested and charged Brian Mbewe with one count of Corrupt Practices with Public Officer in October 2021.

Ndola Subordinate Court has convicted and sentenced a businessman to 18 months imprisonment with hard labour, for Corrupt Practices with Public Officer, involving K10, 000.
In presiding over the matter, Chief Resident Magistrate, Chibwili found Brian Mbewe guilty on one count of Corrupt Practices with Public Officer and convicted him to 18 months imprisonment with hard labour effective from the date of Judgment.
According to Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Acting Head-Corporate Communications Dr. Dorothy Mzumara, the Court has also ordered the forfeiture of the seized K10, 000 cash gratification to the State to be deposited in the government revenue fund.
“Hon. Chibwili the Chief Resident Magistrate who presided over the matter, found Brian Mbewe guilty on one (1) count of Corrupt Practices with Public Officer Contrary to the Anti-Corruption Act No. 3 of 2012 and convicted him to 18 months imprisonment with hard labour effective from the date of Judgment.”
Dr. Mzumara explained that Anti-Corruption Commission arrested and charged Brian Mbewe with one count of Corrupt Practices with Public Officer in October 2021.
“Details of the offence are that on 21st August, 2019, a special operation was instituted at Sakanya Border in Ndola District by Zambia Police Service Officers from Kamfinsa Mobile Unit to curb the smuggling of mealie meal to the Democratic Republic of Congo. Around 22:00 hours on the material day, the Officers led by Sergeant Vernon Lungenda apprehended 10 Cyclists carrying Bicycles laden with a total of 129 bags of mealie meal heading into DR Congo for sale”
“The Cyclists told the Officers that the mealie meal belonged to Brian Mbewe who had hired them to smuggle the said mealie meal into DR Congo. The Officers then interrogated Brian Mbewe who corruptly offered and gave them cash gratification in the sum of K10, 000.00 for the release of the Bicycles, Cyclists and the 129 bags of mealie meal,” Dr. Mzumara said.
