The Citizens Environmental and Social Concern (CESCo) says it is disappointed with the state of neglect obtaining at the Chunga dump site in Lusaka.
The organization says it is unacceptable for the Lusaka City Council to let the dump site get to such a deplorable state because of not taking proactive and appropriate action.
CESCo Executive Director Conwell Hakapya tells Money FM News that even if the local authority has no money to repair and maintain the facility, he believes they have the capacity to bring stakeholders on board to help avert such a situation.
“The corporate world has always proven to be helpful every time the city has a challenge so if approached, we don’t think they can fail to turn up,” he said.
Mr. Hakapya says the Lusaka City Council being the biggest local authority in the Country needs to start leading by example by being on top of things and be proactive rather than reactive.
“And when they identify a new piece of land to put up a new dump site, they should seriously consider engaging a private company to partner with, because it seems they have no capacity to adequately run a sustainable dump site,” he said.
But when contacted for a comment, LCC Assistant Public Relations Manager Brenda Katongola says the council is working hard to ensure that there is sanity in the disposal of waste in Lusaka.
Ms Katongola says there has been a breakdown of the equipment at Chunga Dump Site which she says the council is addressing with the Ministry of Local Government.
