National Union of Public and Private Educators of Zambia (NUPPEZ) has called on government to consider reopening non-examination classes next term which is starting mid of September.
Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Union President Victor Muyumba said in as much as Covid-19 cases in the country keep increasing, examination classes have not recorded any serious cases, hence the union will not oppose the reopening of the remaining classes.
Mr. Muyumba stated that non-examination classes should be allowed to get back to school this coming term so that some topics that should have been covered from the time they closed can be taught before next year.
“In as much as we may be talking about Covid-19 cases going up, let’s also look at what has been prevailing in the examination classes. We don’t seem to have recorded serious cases, and because of the same we wouldn’t be averse as a union to the reopening of the no-examination classes.”
“They too should simply get back this coming term which is starting mid of September so that some topics can be taught in this particular year that should have been taught from the time they closed,” Mr. Muyumba said.
He observed that if the pandemic continues up to next year, even pupils who are writing examinations this year will be stranded.
“We don’t know how long this Covid-19 will take, you can imagine if we went up to March next year like this, even the same examination classes that are writing now will be stranded, they will be home,” he added.
