The National Union for Small-Scale Farmers of Zambia says it is expecting 50kg bag of maize to be over K80 in this year’s crop marketing season.
Union Director General Dr. Frank Kayula says this is because of the high costs incurred by the farmers.
Dr. Kayula has also noted that Zambia has lost about 70 percent production from Southern Province due to the persistent dry spells in the southern region.
He said Zambia is not depending on the northern part of the country for maize production as this has received a fair rainfall.
He added that food security for Zambia will be ‘fairly ok’.
Dr. Kayula stated that the farmers on the other hand should receive a fair price in order not to compromise national food security.
