Private sector can engage in PPPs to support clean cooking methods – Expert

• Promotion of clean cooking methods is a critical step towards reducing deforestation.
• Deforestation is a critical issue in Zambia, leading to significant environmental degradation and biodiversity loss.
• Government and private sector can work together to create a thriving business environment for SMEs.

An Energy Expert has urged the private sector to engage in Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) with government to support clean cooking initiatives.
Speaking to Money FM News, Bornface Zulu said promotion of clean cooking methods is a critical step towards reducing deforestation and improving the country’s energy sector.
Mr. Zulu stated that government can also create a regulatory environment that encourages innovation and entrepreneurship in the clean cooking sector.
He noted that deforestation is a critical issue in Zambia, leading to significant environmental degradation and biodiversity loss.
“In addition, it has a negative impact on the energy sector, as it limits the country’s ability to generate renewable energy. One of the major drivers of deforestation in Zambia is the use of traditional cooking methods, such as open fires and charcoal stoves. To address this issue, the government needs to promote clean cooking methods and implement strategies for SME business planning. The first step in promoting clean cooking methods is to raise awareness among the population about the benefits of using clean cooking stoves.”
“The private sector can also play a key role in promoting clean cooking methods. Private companies can invest in the development and production of clean cooking stoves, and provide training and support to SMEs involved in the manufacture and distribution of these stoves. Additionally, the private sector can engage in public-private partnerships with the government to support clean cooking initiatives,” Mr. Zulu stated.
He further advised government and private sector to work together to create a thriving business environment for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) involved in the production and distribution of clean cooking stoves, by providing incentives, development tools, and public awareness campaigns.
“One of the most significant benefits of promoting clean cooking methods is the positive impact it will have on the environment. Less deforestation means more land for conservation, which will help to protect endangered species and preserve biodiversity. Additionally, promoting clean cooking will help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality.”
“The government should provide incentives and subsidies to promote the adoption of clean cooking stoves. These incentives can include tax breaks, low-interest loans, and grants for SMEs involved in the manufacture and distribution of clean cooking stoves. Additionally, the government can work with international organizations to obtain funding for clean cooking programs,” he added.
Zambia is ranked among countries with the highest deforestation in the world at an estimated rate of 250,000 to 300,000 hectares per year and key drivers range from wood fuel, agriculture expansion, mining, timber extraction, bush fires to land and infrastructure development.
