The Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) has charged that the deployment of speed cameras on selected roads will enhance sustainable road transport and improve the road safety profile of Zambia.
Speaking at a public discussion on the implementation of speed cameras in Lusaka, RTSA Chief Executive Officer Zindaba Soko, stated that the country is ready to implement latest Information and Communications Technologies as a means of enhancing sustainable road transport and reduce the number of road traffic crashes in the country.
Mr. Soko states that the deployment of speed cameras on selected roads has brought about sanity and increased the compliance levels to road traffic rules and regulations among motorists.
He said as part of its on-going innovations, the Agency will deploy more cameras to other parts of the country especially the highways where accidents are so prominent.
He however, stated that the deployment of more cameras will only be conducted on roads that have proper road signage.
He adds that the Agency conducts roads safety audits to ensure roads have the correct and approved road furniture with adequate safety designs.
“Zambia is very ready for speed cameras and they have created no room for corruption or negotiations for offenders. We also want to eliminate excessive speed on the Zambian roads which is among the leading causes of road injuries and fatalities in Zambia”, he said.
Mr. Soko revealed that the Agency may consider revising speed limits on selected roads only when it is satisfied that the compliance levels have improved and the designs of the roads are more appropriate.
