Dr. Oliver Bulaya explained that there are many factors in the agriculture sector that impedes progression of many smallholder farmers, such as high input cost, market linkages and information gaps for rural farmers.
Dr. Bulaya made his remarks following Zambia’s successful hosting of African Union 4th Midyear coordinating summit under the theme is “Building Resilience in Nutrition on the African Continent: Accelerate the Human Capital, Social and Economic Development is not by accident”
He said the theme resonates well with pronouncements of President Hakainde Hichilema who has shown his Intentions to ensure Zambia’s Agriculture takes its rightful place in the region by producing more.
Dr. Bulaya is of the view that Zambia has laid a very good foundation in many fronts in terms of its agriculture prowess further emphasizing that hosting this summit is an encouragement to do more.
Dr. Bulaya as such has also encouraged the private sector to rise to the occasion and collaborate with government in ensuring Zambia becomes a beacon of hope in food production.
“Ministry of Agriculture is among the critical Ministry that advance food security of our country yet it faces a lot of challenges,” he said.
He pointed out that the ministry of Agriculture must be well funded in the next year emphasizing that nothing can be attained if the ministry of agricultural is not well funded to meet its aspirations and that of farmers.
“The grading of our country to low-income levels is temporary Zambia can arise by setting its priorities right,” he added.
