Simon Mwewa Lane reserved for Street Vending

The Ministry of Local Government says it is exploring means and ways in partnership with the Lusaka City Council to manage street vending in a coordinated manner.
Minister in Charge Vincent Mwale has told Parliament in a ministerial statement that his ministry is concerned that some council police officers are using maximum force and harassing street vendors.
Mr. Mwale says government has identified Simon Mwewa Lane off Lumumba road to allow street vendors to operate there as a short term measure as they await for the completion of Simon Mwelwa Market.
He said the Simon Mwewa Market that is under construction in Lusaka will have enough toilets and other sanitary facilities and hence the need to temporary accommodate the traders there.
Mr. Mwale stated that the gutted City Market when reconstructed will accommodate over 14, 000 traders in Lusaka while Kapalala Market which is also under construction in Ndola will absorb over 4, 000.
“Mr. Speaker, the construction of the gutted City Market in Lusaka and Kapalala Market in Ndola have reached an advanced stage,” said Mr. Mwale.
He also said his ministry is equally concerned that some council police officer have continued to use force in enforcing the SI that bans Street Vending in Zambia.
