Small Scale Farmers arrested for unlawful cannabis cultivation.

The Drug Enforcement Commission says it has arrested three people in North-Western Province and One on the Copperbelt Province for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis plants weighing over 2 tonnes, contrary to Chapter 96 of the laws of Zambia.


Commission Deputy Public Relations Officer Mwenge Mulenga says the four, who are all small scale farmers include three from North- Western Province identified as Kingsly Kubesa Mubanga, 62, Ferst Kilunde, 46, of Kyantete, Shilai Kalekesha, 34, and Enock Ofah, 46, of Masaiti on the Copperbelt Province.
Mr. Mulenga said the four suspects were all intercropping cannabis with maize.

“Kingsly Kubesa Mubanga, 62, was found with fresh cannabis weighing 1.7 tonnes where as Enock Ofah, 46 of Masaiti on the Copperbelt was found with 450 Kilograms. Ferst Kilunde, 46, and Shilai Kalekesha, 34, of North- Western Province were found with fresh cannabis plants weighing 97 and 96 kilograms respectively. The Quartet were all intercropping cannabis with maize,” Mr. Mulenga said.

He further disclosed that the Commission also arrested a 19 year old male of Bauleni Compound in Lusaka, identified as Clement Siuleaba for trafficking in 45 sachets of heroin.
“All suspects are in Police custody and will appear in court soon,” he added.
