TIZ calls for Political Party, Elections Financing Law

• What is currently there should be re-looked at as a political party’s bill
• As much as we appreciate the positive use of money in political party and campaign financing, we are aware of its negative effects.
• Huge donations of big monies, thereby influencing policy and legal framework.”

Transparency International Zambia (TIZ) says it is important to revive the political Party’s Law as a way of enhancing transparency, accountability and integrity in political party financing and campaign financing.

TI-Z Democratic Governance Lead Chimuka Nachibinga pointed out, TIZ is of the view that what is currently there should be re-looked at as a political party’s bill then subject it to stakeholder consultations in a bid to have a comprehensive one that different stakeholders will be satisfied with and used as an advocacy for its enactment.

Mr. Nachibinga further stated that the organization with backup from different political parties is also calling for introduction of a political party and elections financing Law.

He said as much as positive use of Money is appreciated in Political party and campaign financing, TIZ is aware of its negative effects such as huge donations of big monies thereby influencing policy and legal framework and robbing peoples voice in voting.

“As much as we appreciate the positive use of money in political party and campaign financing, we are aware of its negative effects such as huge donations of big monies, thereby influencing policy and legal framework.”

“Robbing people’s voices/right to express themselves in voting,” said Mr. Nachibinga.

Mr. Nachibinga was speaking during a Virtual Civil Society Organization and Media Education consensus-building workshop on Political Party and Campaign Financing.

And Governance, Elections, Advocacy, Research Services (GEARS) Initiative Executive Director Macdonald Chipenzi expected to see that selection of running mate is not done by one person in the political Party bill and conventions which were kept secret are openly given guidance.

“We feel that the political party bill should guide political parties that running mates should also be an institutional office within that political party constitution so that when someone is a running mate, has got the power and the validation of the members and not one Person,” he said.
