Water Resources Management Authority (WARMA) says the water permits it has issued so far translate into US$221 million of the investment portfolio in various sectors of the economy.
Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Authority Public Relations Officer Mubiana Nalwendo said WARMA has been supporting various pillars of the economy through the issuance of water permits.
Mr. Nalwendo explained that some of the sectors that the Authority supports include agriculture, aquaculture, hydro power generation and many others that require the use of water resources.
“In terms of supporting various pillars of the economy, the permits that we have issued translate to various amounts of investments. So far as we speak, the investment portfolio that the permits did translate into is around US$221 million. These investments go into agriculture, recreation, investment in aquaculture, etc.”
“So put together, the permits that we do issue actually do support various pillars of the economy, so in short, WARMA does support agriculture, aquaculture, it supports hydro power production and supports many other sectors that do require the use of water resources. Right now as we speak, translation of investment portfolio that we have seen through the issuance of these water permits is the same around US$220 million worth of investment,” Mr. Nalwendo said.
Meanwhile, Mr. Nalwendo revealed that the Authority has issued about 277 water permits so far this year, out of which 246 are surface water permits, while 48 are ground water permits.
He said this brings the cumulative number of water permits issued so far to 1, 356.
“So far this year, WARMA has issued about 277 water permits and this means we have issued about 246 surface water permits and 48 ground water permits. So cumulatively, we stand at 1, 356 permits so far issued in total.”
“So now the resources obviously raised from this exercise will be channeled towards improving the services that we offer to the public because these are user fees and we need to improve our service delivery to the public,” he stated.
