World Bank funded Momboshi Dam increasing irrigation potential

• Government is happy with the program which was funded by the Bank at a reasonable value compared to what it is doing.
• It is also important for World Bank to learn the country at first hand by knowing the reality on the ground.
• World Bank was encouraged by President Hakainde Hichilema’s Vision.

Minister of Agriculture says the World Bank funded Momboshi Dam program in Central Province, Chisamba District is increasing the irrigation Potential in the agriculture sector.

Speaking during a World Bank-Government Republic of Zambia High Level Policy Dialogue on behalf of the Zambian delegation, Reuben Mutolo notes government is happy with the program which was funded by the Bank at a reasonable value compared to what it is doing.

“The last time I was there in October they (Farmers) were doing Irish Potatoes and the production is good.” he disclosed.

Mr. Mutolo further noted the initiative should be replicated to other areas such as Energy, Local government and tourism among others as the benefits are tangible.

“We are very happy about programs like that because they are tangible.” He said.

And World Bank Executive Director for Spain who was also delegation leader Eva Maestro said World Bank was encouraged by President Hakainde Hichilema’s Vision as it is a very ambitious one as it goes in the right direction.

Ms. Maestro said in line with the vision, the bank called for a dialogue on what the priority areas are considering specific steps and reforms government is planning in a number of areas that the Bank feels are important after dialogue with a number of stakeholders in a bid to unlock all the potential that the country has and meet goals the new government has line up.

“That will help us to have a clear vision on how best the Bank can engage with Zambia going forward both with our financing products but also with the knowledge that the instruction has.” She said.

Ms. Maestro noted it was also important for World Bank to learn the country at first hand by knowing the reality on the ground and further engagement with the country following a tour which included the Momboshi Dam.
