A Commercial Fish Farmer in Siavonga district of Southern Province has embarked on the process of expanding fish cages and exporting fish.
Bryan McCoy Yalelo Chief Executive Officer has disclosed that the company intends to start exporting fish to Congo DR in the next two weeks.
Mr McCoy says the company also intends to start exporting processed fish to South Africa and later be introduced into Zambian supermarkets.
He has also disclosed that the company plans to produce five hundred metric tones of fish for export this year.
He says in 2018 the company produced nine thousand metric tonnes of fish and this year the company plans to produce 12 to 14 thousand metric tonnes of fish.
Mr McCoy has pointed out the sett up Aller Aqua feed plant for fish which is the largest in Africa, as an initiative that has made it possible for the company to expand its production of fish.
He says the extended fish production will contribute in mitigating the fish deficit which the country is experiencing.
“The company has the workforce of 400 workers and the plans to expand production this year will contribute to the creation of 1000 jobs in all its outlets in the country”.
Mr McCoy however laments that the company is facing the challenge of Soya beans due to the droughts and the depreciation of the kwacha last year has made it difficult to lower the price of fish for the benefit of the consumers.
