• Contractors should be paid for works done and not what they have not done.
• Government should work with professional contractors.
• They are in business to contribute to the growth of this nation
Zambia Association of Citizen Contractors (ZACCO) says it supports President Hakainde Hichilema’s decision to only pay contractors who have executed the works.
Association General Secretary Danny Simumba told Money FM News in an interview that contractors must claim money for the works they have done, hence President Hichilema’s stance is morally correct and should be supported by all well-meaning contractors.
Mr. Simumba said it is gratifying that the Head of State clearly stated that those who did the work will be paid, while those who did not do anything will not get the money.
“For the construction sector we took note of some points made by the President during the Press conference and indeed contractors should be paid for works done and not what they have not done. We support that stance by the President because it’s morally correct, contractors must claim money for the works they have done.”
“And indeed it is good that the President has clearly stated that those who did the work will be paid and those who did not do anything will not be paid that is how it should be and all well- meaning contractors should support the President on that score,” Mr. Simumba stated.
He added that contractors must move away from receiving money for something they have not worked for.
“As a nation, we must move away from receiving money for something we have not worked for. This is something that must be inculcated in all Zambians and contractors.”
Mr. Simumba advised government to work with professional contractors because they are genuinely in business and their aim is to contribute to the growth of the country.
“Professional contractors know what is expected of them. They are in business to contribute to the growth of this nation and not to connive to get money from government without doing anything. A genuine contractor desires to work on a project and finish on time, produce quality works then demand for money and that’s what we need to see going forward,” he added.
During a Press Conference recently, President Hakainde Hichilema revealed that some feeder road contractors have not yet been paid because they siphoned a lot of money by signing contracts worth K13 billion for projects that were never delivered.
President Hichilema said government cannot pay for a service that was never delivered, hence some overpriced contracts were canceled in order to protect citizens from wasteful expenditure.
