Energy Minister Matthew Nkhuwa has disclosed that Zambia and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have signed a deal for Zambia to export two hundred megawatts of power to DRC.
Mr. Nkhuwa has also disclosed that the Malawian Government has come back to sign another deal for Zambia to export an additional fifty megawatts of power to that country.
Mr. Nkhuwa says initially, Malawi wants about two hundred megawatts but that the challenge is the transmission line.
He also recalls that six years ago, Zesco was producing one hundred percent of electricity in the country but that now it is producing about eighty percent while the remaining twenty percent is produced by the private sector.
ZESCO and ESCOM of Malawi in August signed a five year agreement for 20 mva electricity power supply.
ZESCO Managing Director Victor Mundende signed the deal on behalf of the power utility company, while Alex Chiwaya who is the Chief Executive Officer for ESCOM signed on behalf of the of Malawian power supply company.
