The Zambia National Education Coalition says the deregistration of three Universities by the Higher Education Authority is a positive development.
Coalition Executive Director George Hamusunga told Money FM News in an interview that Management at the deregistered Universities are aware of the provisions of the Higher Education Authority Act, hence they were supposed to adhere to the set standards of operation.
Mr. Hamusunga said if the quality of education offered by higher learning institutions does not conform to the required national qualification, there is need to close such Universities.
“The deregistration of Universities is a very positive development, the university managements know the provisions of the Higher Education Act and requirement is needed for them to legally operate,” he said.
He however said shutting down a university inconveniences students who may have already paid their tuition fees because they will not be able to access education.
Mr. Hamusunga urged all Universities operating in the country to work on the recommendations of the Higher Education Authority Act and provide quality education.
“It does inconvenience students a lot in the sense that they have paid their tuition fees and will not be able to access education. But University management must quickly work on the recommendations of the Higher Education Authority on what is supposed to be done,” Mr. Hamusunga said.
Yesterday, Higher Education Authority announced the deregistration of three Universities in Lusaka.
The deregistered Universities are Citizen University, Pamodzi, and University of East and Southern Africa.
