Zambia not in a debt distress, Govt maintains

Government has maintained that Zambia is not in a debt distress as claimed by some stakeholders.

The government has further maintained that the Chinese Government will not take over Zambian assets such as ZESCO, Kenneth Kaunda International Airport and ZNBC.

The Africa Confidential has revealed that talks are underway for a Chinese company to takeover power utility ZESCO.

And Africa Confidential has warned that Zambia risks losing its sovereignty to China as that country will seize national assets once government defaults on loans

In a report titled ‘Bonds, bills and ever bigger debts’ published on September 3, Africa Confidential observed that ZNBC was already being run by the Chinese and disclosed that Zesco was also already in talks about a takeover by a Chinese company.

Chief Government Spokesperson in a statement issued to Money FM News said Zambians must disregard with contempt fake stories about Zambia’s economic and debt position in particular.

Ms Siliya, who is also Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services, has advised the public to ignore a continued campaign by detracted individuals who keep making unsubstantiated statements on the economy especially on line.

“It was sad that people with unproductive minds would go as far as posting fake stories in the name of the Minister of Finance Hon Mwanakatwe,” she said.

The Minister has also urged media houses to question sources who were unwilling to come out in the open and yet wanted their ill-informed opinion to be heard.
