Zambia witnessed numerous Corruption scandals in 2021 – TIZ

• Zambia’s fight against corruption over the last one year has had mixed results in terms of success.
• The year started off with the launch of the 2020 Corruption Perception Index.
• The CPI showed that Zambia had dropped by one point in terms of its score.

Transparency International Zambia (TI-Z) has observed that the country witnessed a lot of corruption scandals over the last one year.

Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Organization Executive Director Maurice Nyambe cited the Honey Bee scandal as well as the issue of the 48 houses whose owner the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) was not able to determine until recently, as some of the scandals that hinge on corruption.

Mr. Nyambe stated that the corruption related scandals witnessed over the last year, did not board well with regards to the country’s reputation to the outside world.

He noted that the country started the year off with the launch of the 2020 Corruption Perception Index (CPI) which showed that Zambia had dropped by one point in terms of its score, an indication that the corruption situation had become worse.

“The fight against corruption in Zambia over the last one year is one that has had mixed results in terms of success. You will recall that we started the year off with the launch of the 2020 Corruption Perception Index (CPI) which basically showed that Zambia had dropped by one point in terms of its score which entailed that our corruption situation had become worse or that it was not getting any better.”

“So from that point on, of course the race has been on to ensure that we put in place measures and interventions that critically address this long standing issue of corruption. We saw really a lot of corruption related scandals over the last year and this did not board well in terms of even our reputation as a country, when it comes to issues of corruption,” Mr. Nyambe said.

And Mr. Nyambe said it is the organization’s hope that the commitment shown by the new administration in fighting corruption will bring about progress over the coming years in curtailing the scourge.

“Our hope is that given the apparent commitment that we are seeing from the UPND government in terms of even the pronouncements that the President has been making, we hope that this will really give impetus to the Anti-Corruption and that we are going to see a lot of progress over the coming years even in terms of the fight against Corruption,” he stated.

Zambia will on Thursday 9th December, 2021, join the rest of the world in commemorating the International Anti-Corruption Day under the theme; Your Right, Your Role, say No to Corruption.
