Zambia’s timber on high demand – Timber Producers

The Timber Producers Association of Zambia (TPAZ) says Zambia’s timber is on high demand on the international market which the country should take advantage of this.
The association also says Rosewood, which is common in North Western Province, can earn the country revenue due to its high demand on the international market.
TPAZ Vice President Charles Masange has told Money FM News that it is encouraging that the North Western Provincial Administration will host the expo this year among the issues to look at is the full potential of the timber industry.
Mr. Masange has however advised that the government should come up with policies aimed at encouraging locals to venture into timber production saying this is a lucrative business if the country puts up certain incentives and measures.
Mr. Masange says there is an urgent need for the government through the Ministries of Finance, Commerce, Trade and Industry, and Lands and Natural Resources to introduce Auction Floors.
“You see this is February, we were talking of introducing the timber auction floors in provinces by January but this has not yet been done. Can the relevant ministries ensure that this is introduced as this will go a long way in promoting timber trading,” he said.
He argues that North Western Province is strategically positioned for timber trading with countries such as Angola and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) if only these auction floors can be introduced.
The TPAZ Vice President has urged the organizers of the Expo North West Zambia 2019 to ensure that the engage both local and foreign investors to invest in the timber industry in the province.
