ZRA to impound illegally imported vehicles after amnesty

• ZRA has declared total war against any form of illegality.
• The Authority will soon swing into action to impound and seize all illegally imported vehicles after 26th of May 2021.
• All those with dubiously imported motor vehicles must step forward and clear their vehicles before the deadline.

Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) says it will start impounding illegally imported vehicles once the amnesty comes to an end next month.
Speaking during the donation of 86 seized motor vehicles to the public sector and charitable organizations in Kapiri Mposhi district, Central Province, Authority Commissioner General Kingsley Chanda said once the amnesty ends, ZRA will work with the security wings to ensure that the country has no illegally imported vehicles on the roads.
Mr. Chanda said the Authority has declared total war against any form of illegality such as smuggling, misclassification of goods, under-valuation, and dubious importation of motor vehicles.
“With the collaboration with all the security wings, we will soon swing into action to impound and seize all illegally imported vehicles that will not have been normalized by the 26th of May 2021.”
“All the groundwork in this regard has already been done in terms of preparation of the place where the seized vehicles will be parked before donation. No one with an illegally imported motor vehicle will escape this dragnet. We promise to sweep the nation of all illegally imported vehicles,” Mr. Chanda warned.
He urged people with dubiously imported motor vehicles to step forward and clear their vehicles before the amnesty deadline, stating that after the deadline, all those who will not step forward will have themselves to blame.
And Mr. Chanda stated that the donation of the seized vehicles is in line with the approval by Ministry of Finance to give forfeited goods in accordance with the laws of Zambia.
He disclosed that the Zambia Police service has been allocated 17 motor vehicles and 7 motor bikes in order to execute its duties efficiently.
“The donation is in light of the received approval from the Minister of Finance to donate forfeited goods in line with Section 204 of the Customs and Excise Act, Chapter 322 of the Laws of Zambia. In this regard, we are donating a total of 86 motor vehicles sitting in various Customs stations in the country to 14 recipients.”
“Among the recipients are Zambia Police Service, Drug Enforcement Commission, Anti-Corruption Commission, University Teaching Hospital, National Prosecution Authority, Judicial Complaints Authority, and Auditor General’s Office. Zambia Police Service is getting the biggest number of 17 motor vehicles plus 7 motorbikes. This is so because we realize the transport challenges that the Zambia Police Service is facing in the execution of their duties,” he said.
Mr. Chanda said this in a speech read for him by ZRA Corporate Communications Manager Topsy Sikalinda.
