ZULAWU admonishes council workers to uphold discipline

• Council workers’ union urges workers to be committed to duty.
• Workers involved in illegal allocation of plots will not be defended.
• Labour union ready to fight unfair dismissal of workers.

Zambia United Local Authorities Workers Union (ZULAWU) has urged council workers to be committed to duty and uphold high levels of discipline.
Reacting to the dismissal of 15 council workers by the Local Government Service Commission, union General Secretary, Emmanuel Mwinsa said workers should be at the forefront of helping councils realise their objectives rather than pilfering its resources.
‘‘We (union) want to command a workforce that is doing what is expected of them and supporting the work of the councils ‘’ he said.
Mr. Mwinsa added that the labour union will not side with workers that are involved in unethical activities like illegally allocating land.
‘‘A situation where a worker absconds from work or engages in illegal issuing of plots will not be condoned by the union,’’ he said
Mr. Mwinsa however retaliated that ZULAWU is ready to defend any worker that is unfairly dismissed by a council.
In a statement issued yesterday, Local Government Service Commission (LGSC) Secretary, Lazarous Mulenda announced that the commission had dismissed 15 council workers for alleged misappropriation of funds, theft, dishonest conduct, gross negligence and absenteeism.
