The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has arrested Ten (10) people for trafficking over 1.3 tonnes of miraa concealed in boxes bearing various false labels.
DEC Public relations officer Theresa Katongo says the miraa was concealed in boxes labelled pure Zambian green tea, Moringa, Ethiopian tea and other tea labels.
Ms Katongo has identified the suspects as Elias Ali Yassine a 36 year-old Mozambican national and Edward Lungu, 36 of Jack Compound for trafficking in 50 boxes of dry miraa weighing 889kg.
Also arrested and jointly charged is Louis Jose Do Espirito Manuel Santo a 33 year-old Angolan national of Kalundu in Lusaka and Emmanuel Nalubamba, 27, of Ngombe Compound for trafficking in 5 boxes of miraa weighing 78.6kg.
Others arrested include Kondwani Zimba, 24, of Mtendere Compound for trafficking in 51 kg of miraa, Peter Sichamba, 51, of Chilanga for trafficking in 170kg of miraa, Alice Lubinda, 50, of Ndeke Township in Ndola for trafficking in 72kg of miraa.
The Commission has also arrested and jointly charged Tizazu Takele a 45 year-old Ethiopian national of Chawama Compound and Evaristo Mbumba, 31 of the same abode for trafficking in 58kg of miraa.
She says in a statement to Money FM News that the suspects are in Police custody and will appear in court soon.
