1,250 tons of waste is produced in Lusaka daily

Lusaka Alone Produces about 1,250 tons of waste on a daily basis out of which 25 per cent is plastic and 20 per cent is card-boxes and paper, according to Robert De Raeve, the head of political, press and information at the COMESA and Zambian Delegation to the European Union.

Mr. Raeve says these amounts are expected to increase in future if nothing is done about it and has advised that the use of single use plastics and other plastic products be reduced.

He says these materials pose grate threats to terrestrial and marine ecosystems, biodiversity and human health.

He has therefore cited the Circular Economy which is a recycling process and the EU Plastic Strategy 2018 as measures the EU has in place to help tackle the plastic problem.

The EU Plastic Strategy 2018 is Aimed at increasing awareness about plastic waste to ensure that the root causes of the issues are tackled.

This follows the commemoration of the World Clean up day today the 15th of September 2018 which is in line with the EU circular Economy Action Plan 2015 and the EU Plastic Strategy 2018.

The WCD is an initiative of the Let’s Do It! World, a civic led mass movement which began in Estonia, Europe in 2008 when 50,000 people united to clean up the entire country in 5 hours.

Now, millions of people in about 153 countries have united to clean up the world.
