Aviation Industry has potential to grow economy – CAA

The Civil Aviation Authority of Zambia (CAA) says the aviation industry has potential to help in the growth of Zambia’s economy.
CAA Director General Gabriel Lesa says currently, the aviation’s contribution to the country’s economy is about 3.5 percent but that it can contribute more than 5 percent.
Mr. Lesa says it is also motivating that the government has continued to invest heavily in the aviation industry of about K1.7 billion annually on infrastructure development in the industry.
The Civil Aviation Authority Director General said this when he featured on Money FM Business Radio’s Policy, Power and Money Programme that airs every Mondays and Thursdays at 9hrs.
“The aviation industry has potential to help grow the economy. In other countries, it is contributing to the growth of the economy more than the manufacturing sector,” he said.
Mr. Lesa has also encouraged more investors to consider investing in the aviation industry and help grow the sector.
And on the relaunching of the Zambian Airways, Mr. Lesa says it will spur economic growth as it will open up markets for Zambia’s products.
He says the coming on board of the Zambian Airways will also help the growth of Zambia’s horticulture.
He says before the demise of Zambian Airways back in the 1990s, Zambia had a market for fresh flowers, vegetables and fruits in Europe saying when it is relaunched, that market can be revived.
Mr. Lesa says when the national airline is relaunched, it will also give birth to other companies in the horticulture saying most of the companies suffered when Zambian Airways was closed
