Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) says it has conducted a countrywide survey to check if the cement manufacturing companies that were recently fined have reverted to the pre-cartel factory prices.
Commission Senior Public Relations Officer Namukolo Kasumpa tells Money FM News in an interview that the deadline that was set by the CCPC Board for the cement companies to reduce prices was 8th May, 2021 which has since elapsed.
“Once the information collected from all the provincial headquarters is compiled, the Commission will inform the nation on its next course of action,” Ms. Kasumpa said.
On 31st March 2021, the CCPC Board of Commissioners fined Lafarge Zambia, Zambezi Portland and Mpande Limestone Limited 10% of their annual turnovers for the year 2019 and another 10% of their 2020 annual turnovers for price fixing and division of markets, while Dangote Cement Zambia Limited was granted full leniency for having cooperated with the Commission during investigations.
The three cement producers were ordered to cut cement prices and revert to what was described as pre-cartel prices ranging between K50 to K110 per 50 kilogram bag.
