The Citizens Environment and Social Concern (CESCo) says solid waste fees should not be exorbitant because that might lead to a rise in unsustainable and illegal dumping of waste.
The organization also welcomes the approval by Cabinet the publication and introduction of the Bill, entitled, “Solid Waste Regulation and Management Bill, 2018” in Parliament during the current sitting.
The objectives of the Bill include the sustainable regulation and management of solid waste, general and self-service solid waste services, the incorporation of solid waste management companies and define their statutory functions and the licensing of solid waste service providers, operators and self-service solid waste providers and provide for their functions.
Organization Executive Director Conwell Hakapya says the Solid Waste Regulation and Management Bill, 2018 is a very welcome and progressive Bill and hopes the Solid Waste Management Companies to be incorporated will play a key role in sensitizing the people on the need to reduce waste.
Mr. Hakapya says Zambia desperately needs to pursue a sustainable and zero waste future.
“And also, the SWMC fees should not be exorbitant because that might lead to a rise in unsustainable and illegal dumping of waste,” he said.
