The Association for Employers for Domestic Workers in Zambia has called on employers of domestic workers to immediately comply with the revised minimum wage by increasing salaries for their workers.
The association has also hailed the government for revising the minimum wages for domestic workers saying this will help them in uplifting their lives.
The government last revised the minimum wage in 2012.
The association also says the revised minimum wage for domestic workers by government will not result in job losses as claimed by some stakeholders.
In an interview with Money FM News in Lusaka today, Association President Humphrey Monde says the revised minimum wage has come at the right time, adding that domestic workers in the country have been subjected to low wages of about five hundred and twenty two kwacha since 2012.
Mr. Monde however feels that it will be a challenge for most employers to comply with the new law, stating that the ministry of labour has no capacity to carry out door to door inspections to check who is adhering to the new minimum wage or not due to the restriction by the law.
“The fact that government has not increased salaries for civil servants in the country, should not be the reason why domestic workers should not be entitled to a decent wage,” he said.
Mr. Monde has since advised civil servants in the country to press their union leaders to negotiate for their salary increment, other than subjecting domestic workers to low wages due to their non-increment in salaries.
