Export ban of pure Zambian honey to SA worries CUTS

The Consumer Unit Trust Society (CUTS) International Zambia notes that the restriction of market access for Zambia’s pure honey by South African authorities may affect trade between the two countries.

The organization has therefore strongly recommended that South African lifts the ban on the importation of Zambia’s pure honey until such a time when all the trading procedures have been followed.

South Africa has restricted market access for Zambia’s pure honey with immediate effect.
This is because a consignment allegedly from Zambia was found to be contaminated with a disease called American Foulbrood (Paenibacillus larvae).

But CUTS Zambia Center Coordinator Chenai Mukumba feels that the procedure to impose the ban were breached.

Ms Mukumba says South African has not necessarily taken all the trade procedures before implementing the ban on Zambia’s pure honey.

She says South Africa is one of Zambia’s largest trading partner and hence the need to avoid such unnecessary bans.i
