Extreme weather events will continue ravaging the world – Nzovu

• Worsening extreme weather events like heat waves, droughts, wildfires, floods, and hurricanes.
• Africa will be impacted more than any other continent.
• Africa to speak with one voice.

Green Economy and Environment Minister has pointed out that findings of the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports indicate that the worsening extreme weather events like heat waves, droughts, wildfires, floods, and hurricanes will continue ravaging the world.

Making a Virtual Presentation to the Committee of Heads of State and Government on Climate Change at the margins of the United Nations Oceans Conference currently being co-hosted by the Governments of Kenya and Portugal in Lisbon, Portugal, Collins Nzovu said Africa will be impacted more than any other continent, and that the adverse impacts of climate change are limiting Africa’s economic and development trajectory.

Mr. Nzovu also expressed the disappointment of the African Group of Negotiators (AGN) on the progress made on the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA) while calling for balanced and substantive attention of adaptation in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change process.

He emphasized the need to speed up the operationalization of the GGA by COP27 through securing adequate, predictable, new, and additional finance, technology transfer, and capacity building for adaptation.

The minister had since called for Africa to speak with one voice and maximize on consistent engagements between the African Group of Negotiators (AGN) led by Zambia, the African Ministerial Committee on Environment Ministers (AMCEN) led by Senegal and the Committee of Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC) led by Kenya.

According to the Ministry of Green Economy Communications Unit in a statement, Mr. Nzovu presented the report of the outcomes of the 56th sessions of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) and Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) to the Extended Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC).

“The Subsidiary Bodies meeting were held in Bonn, Germany, between 6 and 16 June, 2022 to prepare for COP 27, which is scheduled to take place in November 2022 in Egypt,” the Ministry indicated in a statement.
