Govt to improve marine transport

Government says it is working to enhance the marine transport so that is can also contribute to the country’s economic development.
Speaking at the Engineering Colloquium in Lusaka, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Communications Engineer Misheck Lungu says once marine transport is improved people in rural areas can find it safe to use the mode of transport.
Mr. Lungu says that government is working with Local Authorities in the country to ensure that marine transport is sustainable and safe for members of the public.
He says it is only when Marine transport is sustainable and safe for public use that it can contribute to Zambia’s economic development.
Mr. Lungu further says government is also working on ways to integrate air transport and rail transport in a bid to promote communication in the transport sector.
He laments that the current modes of transport are not linked a situation that has disadvantaged the transport sector.
“Government is also working on improving the rails sector to protect the road sector that it has invested in at a huge cost,” he said.
And speaking at the same event, Engineering Institution of Zambia says engineering plays a critical role in any countries national agenda, the more reason the institution needs to reflect on the impacts of the national budget on the sector.
EIZ Vice President Euegine Haazela says there is need to enhance the quality of technical education energy, water and sanitation, mining transport communication and infrastructure in an effort to make the sector more effective.
