Govt urged to mitigate cassava brown streak virus disease

• Government to quickly support farmers that have been hit by the cassava brown streak disease
• It is imperative that Government responds to the challenge as farmers depend on Cassava.
• Government must invest in research to curb the virus

National Union for Small Scale farmers in Zambia has called on Government to quickly support farmers that have been hit by the cassava brown streak disease in Luapula province.
Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Association Executive Director Ebony Loloji said with most farmers in Luapula province being dependent on the crop, it is imperative that Government responds to the challenge.
Mr. loloji stated that farmers may experience food insecurities if government does not respond as soon as possible.
“Any disease that affects Livestock and crops is of great concern to the Association as it affects production of the country,” he said.
Mr. Loloji has further advised Government to invest more resources in research and ensure that it comes up with new ideas to mitigate diseases that affect the Agriculture sector.
Reports indicate that a cassava brown streak disease has broken out in Luapula province and has attacked the crop.
