A former Secretary General of the Allied Workers Union of Zambia has appealed to government to expedite the release of the 251 million Kwacha balance owed to the Local Authorities Superannuation Fund (LASF).
Yotam Mtayachalo says only K150 million was released in 2017 and this has put pressure on the fund.
Mr. Mtayachalo has also advised government to repeal the LASF Act of 2000 claiming that it barres the fund from recruiting new members.
He says members also need to be allowed to choose a pension scheme of their choice as opposed to letting them belong to a single scheme.
The Former secretary general says the demonstration which was staged at cabinet office by former ZESCO and local government employees due to delayed payment of their full benefits from the LASF is a worrisome situation.
He says government needs to urgently address the matter as retirees are living under poor and unfavorable conditions.
