Human capital key to economic development – Luo

The Ministry of Higher Education says economic diversification and industrialization cannot be achieved without the right human capital in the country.
Minister in charge Professor Nkandu Luo says these can only be achieved with an industry that has people with particular skills, qualifications and standards.
She has therefore noted the need for the quality of Education in Zambia to be re-engineered.
She was speaking at the Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZAQA) Stakeholders workshop on the Development of National Occupational Standards (NOS) in Lusaka on Wednesday.
Speaking at the same event, ZAQA Director and Chief Executive Officer Miriam Chiyaba says her organization is working on a database that will have people’s names and their qualifications.
Mrs. Chiyaba says this will ensure that people with fraudulent qualifications are barred from industry.
She has added that her organization is in the process of aligning Zambian qualifications to the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
She says this will address the challenge that most Zambians have in having their qualifications accepted in other countries in the region, citing South Africa as one such country.
Mrs Chiyaba says they are currently working with 5 sectors namely the Agriculture, Construction, Tourism, Energy and manufacturing sectors to create acceptable qualification Standards.
