ILO calls for protection of ‘Kuwait, Dubai bound workers’

The International Labour Organization (ILO) has advised that the protection of the 1, 000 workers who will be sent to Dubai and Kuwait should be on top of the agenda.
The oil-rich United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Kuwait have requested Zambia to provide 1,000 citizens to work as drivers and maids in the two countries.
The workers are expected to have a monthly package of about K13, 000, which will be inclusive of a commission.
But ILO Director for Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique George Okutho tells Money FM News that his organization has welcomed this development but that protection of the workers is critical.
Mr. Okutho has encouraged the government to have a bilateral agreement signed with the receiving countries on certain critical areas.
He says these areas include the conditions of work for the workers and their wellbeing when they arrive in the receiving countries.
“We welcome the opportunity for workers to work in other countries but I think protection of these workers is critical,” he said.
