NHIMA, Zanaco ink deal

• Zanaco to provide a payment platform supporting NHIMA in collection of insurance premiums from Zambians aged 18 years and above.
• Zanaco has incorporated the e-NHIMA payment service on to its SmartPay platform.
• SmartPay is an online solution that enables customers to make payments for statutory obligations.

National Health Insurance Management Authority (NHIMA) says achieving universal health coverage requires adequate and sustainable innovative financing of the health sector.
Speaking during the signing of a partnership agreement for the facilitation of NHIMA insurance premium payments using the Zanaco SmartPay, Authority Vice Board Chairperson Kingsley Chanda said the national insurance scheme plays an important role in the country’s socio-economic development because it is a critical component to the mobilization of resources to enhance the health care system.
Mr. Chanda, who is also Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) Commissioner General, states that NHIMA is designed to attain 100% coverage of all citizens and established residents.
He said achieving this target therefore requires the Authority to come up with reliable user friendly automated systems to facilitate seamless registration to the scheme and payment into the funds.
“Having such systems in place comes with forming mutually beneficial partnerships with critical stakeholders such as Zanaco. The onboarding of ZANACO on the eNHIMA payment platform as a participating bank is therefore a notable milestone towards providing efficient systems to support the successful implementation of the scheme.”
“This partnership will undoubtedly bring mutual benefits to both institutions as Zanaco will attract massive monetary deposits from NHIMA contributions on one hand, and NHIMA will benefit from the timely contributions into the funds on the other hand. The Board is hoping is hoping for more of such partnerships between NHIMA and Zanaco,” Mr. Chanda said.
And speaking at the same event, Zanaco Chief Executive Officer Mukwandi Chibesakunda said the bank’s partnership with NHIMA speaks to Zanaco’s digitization journey and that it will greatly contribute to the well-being of the citizens.
Mrs. Chibesakunda stated that the online payment solution enables customers to pay for their NHIMA obligations from anywhere, reducing the risk of transmission of the COVID-19 pandemic, adding that the solution is also in line with the Bank’s digitization agenda which is currently being driven by the ‘Think Outside the Branch Campaign’, encouraging customers to make use of digital and alternate channels that speak to safety and convenience.
“With its robust digital platform, Zanaco is well placed to cater for the need of mandatory payment of obligations to the National Health Scheme for the Zambian people,” Mrs. Chibesakunda said.
Under the partnership, Zanaco will provide a payment platform supporting NHIMA in the collection of insurance premiums from Zambians aged 18 years and above, while NHIMA will provide health insurance coverage to all Zambian households and the entire health sector.
