The Millers Association of Zambia MAZ says there is no justification as to why millers in the country should not reduce the price of mealie meal.
Speaking when he featured on Money FM Business Radio Station, program dubbed “Money watch” that airs every week day at 17: hours, Association President Andrew Chintala has advised mealie meal retailers in the country to comply to the directive to have the price of the commodity reduced.
Mr Chintala says some selected millers accessioning subsidized maize from the Food Reserve Agency FRA, have reduced the price of the commodity, adding that retailers have maintained high prices of the mealie meal calming they are still holding on to old stock.
He says it is there important for stakeholders in mealie meal business to be honest as possible, with how the pricing of the commodity is managed.
He adds that it is also important for stakeholders in the sector to work together and ensure the set objective of reducing the price of the staple food is achieved
He has further commended government for the construction of the Moboshi dam in Chisamba district, saying the facility will go a long way in producing winter maize.
Mr Chintala says failure to manage mealie meal prices will result in chain reactions that will mostly have a negative impact on consumers.
Mr Chintala has since advised consumers to purchase mealie meal from supper markets where the prices are not exorbitant.
