Zambia makes strides to strengthen financial systems

President Edgar Lungu says Zambia has made strides in strengthening financial management systems through the public management reforms.
The Head of State said this in Livingstone during the East and Southern African Association of Accountant Generals (ESAAG) Annual General Conference.
The General Conference has attracted over 1,500 delegates from 14 countries.
President Lungu says there is need to build strong and right systems aimed at safeguarding public funds.
He said his administration attaches great importance to public management by way of strengthening public management systems.
He said despite being endowed with vast resources, African resources remain unexploited disadvantaging the people.
He has also assured that Zambia’s Public Accounts Committee is very active as it is querying officers who might have misused public funds.
Speaking at the same event, Finance Minister Margaret Mwanakatwe said the industrialization drive is on course and that economic diversification programmes are taking root.
“Undoubtedly, the implementation of the economic stabilisation and growth programme is now bearing good fruit and effectively contributing to the government’s development initiatives outlined in the seventh national development plan,” she said.
“Jobs are being created through the country-wide developmental projects. Through these initiatives, no citizen will be left behind in our mission to make Zambia a prosperous middle-income country by 2030.”
Mrs. Mwanakatwe stated that without the telecommunications expansion projects by the government and the private sector, it will have been difficult for the government to record the successes that it has under the public financial management reforms, the Integrated Financial Management Information System [IFIMIS], and the single treasury account.
