ZULAWU applauds dismissal of 11 Council employees

• Dismissal of 11 employees by Local Government Service Commission is a timely warning to the members.
• The union does not condone lawlessness.
• Anyone found wanting in areas of pilferages or misappropriation of funds will not be defended.

Zambia United Local Authorities Workers Union (ZULAWU) says it will not defend any of its members found guilty of pilferages or misappropriation of funds.
ZULAWU President Kingsley Zulu told Money FM News in an interview that even as the Union protects the interests of its members, it does not condone lawlessness.
Mr. Zulu stated that Council employees who misappropriate public funds deprive the institutions of the much needed resources for payment of salaries and provision of services.
“First of all even as we protect the interests of our members, it must be appreciated that as a union we do not condone lawlessness. So anyone found wanting especially in areas of pilferages or misappropriation of funds will not be defended by the Union, because they are actually depriving the institution of the much needed resources for payment of salaries and also provision of services because Council exist to provide a service.”
“So if these resources are received and pocketed by a few individuals it means we are depriving the community the much needed resources for provision of services. As a Union we will not support any one found in issues of misappropriation of funds or any illegality,” Mr. Zulu said.
And Mr. Zulu stated that the dismissal of 11 Council employees by the Local Government Service Commission is a timely warning to the members to desist from such acts because they will not be supported by the Union.
“Councils are governed by the Local government conditions of service, and these conditions of service are supposed to be adhered to or strictly followed by both the employer and the employees. So anything that the Commission does as long as it is in line with the conditions of service has the support of the institution,” he added.
The Local Government Service Commission recently dismissed eleven employees for misappropriation of funds, theft, dishonest conduct, gross negligence and absenteeism in a bid to ensure a disciplined workforce.

This came to light following a technical support visit to Muchinga, Northern and Luapula Provinces from 26th April to 5th May, 2021 aimed at clearing outstanding cases pertaining to promotions, appointments among other matters.
