The Ministry of Health says it is reviewing the Public Health Act which was enacted in 1948.
Health Minister Chitalu Chilufya says a robust Public Health Act is critical in the country’s disease intelligence and surveillance system.
Dr. Chilufya says having a good disease intelligence and surveillance system helps the country respond rapidly to both local and global health threats.
The Minister said this yesterday when he closed the stakeholders meeting that is reviewing the Public Health Act which was enacted in 1948.
Dr. Chilufya said Zambia needs to heighten its surveillance on diseases outbreaks as it still remains at risk to disease outbreaks considering that it is a landlocked country.
The minister has assured government’s commitment to promoting public health in the country stating that the public health Act once in place will help malign the country’s health system to international health regulations.
He has since stressed the importance of a multispectral approach to be used in shielding all that is being done to enhance the country’s surveillance system in a legal framework.
He commended the various stakeholders that have come together to make the final review of the Public Health Act expressing hope that the final meeting has done away with lacunas that might be there in implementing a robust and resilient public health system.
Zambia National Public health Institute Director Dr. Victor Mukonka explained that the three days meeting has marked the last of six consultative meetings aimed at reviewing the public health Act.
Dr. Mukonka says the review of the bill has been completed and it will now await for the minister to present it in parliament for it to be passed into law, stating that once this is done it will help the country meet the global health agenda and help in addressing key health issues the country is facing.
