Kitwe Hospital carries first AVF operation

The Kitwe Teaching Hospital has carried out the first Arterial Venous Fistula (AVF) operation on a 27 year old male patient.
Our Copperbelt Staffer Alick Nyankata reports that AVF is an operation done on Patients undergoing renal dialysis to facilitate their treatment.
Kitwe Teaching Hospital Public Relations Officer Phoebe Chileya states that the operation was done successfully without engaging surgeons from the University Teaching Hospital to carry out the operation as it was the case in the past.
Ms Chileya says the operation was successfully done after training that was conducted by a United Kingdom based Non-Governmental Organization called Out to Africa through the surgical society of Zambia and the hospital’s surgical department.
She disclosed that previously the patients from the Kitwe Teaching Hospital were referred to UTH for the said operation.
